Did Trump actually want to win?

During the run-up to the US Presidential Election a fairly shrewd observer of the political scene told me several times that she was fairly certain that Donald J Trump had originally stood for President not because he had any expectation of winning but as a PR stunt to help his businesses. She thought that at some point he might have realised that he might actually do it and started campaigning seriously, but she was convinced that this had not been the original plan.

I have been amused to read an extract on the New York magazine website from Michael Wolff's impending book "Fire and fury - inside the Trump White House" which is due to be published on 9th January, in which Wolff argues that Trump not only didn't expect or plan on winning the election when he began his campaign, but his campaign team didn't expect to win or have any real plans about what to do if they did until about 8pm on election night.

I have no idea whether this is true but it would certainly explain a few things!
