A superb analysis of why half the USA voted for Trump

There is an absolutely must-read analysis by David Wong at "Cracked"  here which explains why small-town America, particularly white men without college degrees, voted for Donal Trump in sufficient numbers to put him in the White House.

Don't, don't, please don't be put off by the silly title. If you are interested in politics you must read it.

As someone who lives in a small town in the North of England, I recognise some pretty enormous parallels with why the majority of the people where I live voted Leave (which I didn't) although this is article is very specifically about areas of the USA where people feel left behind and not everything in the UK would match.

A paragraph to give you an idea of the flavour (the "you" it is addressed to is the author's fellow metropolitan liberals)

"The rural folk with the Trump signs in their yards say their way of life is dying, and you smirk and say what they really mean is that blacks and gays are finally getting equal rights and they hate it. But I'm telling you, they say their way of life is dying because their way of life is dying. It's not their imagination."

You can best understand this very thought provoking article - and understand where the author is coming from, which makes it all the more remarkable that he could write it - if you also read his article on Five helpful answers to society's most uncomfortable questions."
