I never heard the programme, and its hard to get some context from text.

how was the "thanks" delivered? was it a sarcastic one? - its just i can see Milliband taking it as a compliment.

The word "thanks" was gently dismissive and almost sotto voce, before moving on to a response - I wouldn't quite call it sarcastic but certainly didn't get the impression Miliband thought it was a complement.
