St Bees school to close

St Bees School, which has offered boarding and day education for more than four centuries, is to close in July according to a statement released today by the Board of Governors.

The 300 pupils, their parents, and staff were told this afternoon that a declining school roll, especially since the economic crisis in 2008, has made its financial position untenable.

In a letter to parents, chairman of governors Emeritus Professor Frank Woods said: “The governors have considered every possible solution. They wish to acknowledge publicly the untiring effort the headmaster and his team have put into our recent recruitment campaigns, both day and boarding."

It is a sad end to more than 400 years of local history.

Its actually a shame to see the end the school. I have personally attened (though never as a "school student") quite a few lectures in its halls. Amongst its most famous "students" would of course be one Rowan Atkinson.

on a personal note, when the school buildings were being repaired in the early 90's muggins made every one of the blocks

Lots of stuff like that has my mark. St Bees school, the liver building in liverpool, a church at gosforth, the square in Cleator moor, lots of things in carlisle, and most famously the path to the Whitehouse.

lots of other things do too, but they are mainly bits on peoples houses or their entire house.

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died. I won't write which way round it was so that all the Remain supporters can assume the post was from a Brexit fanatic welcoming the death of a remainer and all the Leavers can assume it was a Remainiac welcoming one less Brexiteer. There's been plenty of nasty stuff on both sides but if you catch anyone of your own viewpoint  posting something like that who might listen to you, please do call them out on it - and point out that they're giving everyone on your side of the argument a bad name.
