Festival adds £2.5 million to local economy

This year's excellent Whitehaven Festival is estimated to have pumped two and a half million pounds into the local economy. Which in the present economic climate is just what the doctor ordered.

This should be something Copeland council are thinking about. Hard. Not many years ago, lack of support from the council was a major reason why the festival nearly died. That must not be allowed to happen again.

The festival is a must for the town now. Following years of what I like to call the vicious circle.

See Whitehaven is a pain to drive into and park, so less people do so. Because of this some stores are forced to close. So now there are even less people who go, so now more stores close, so less people go, so more things close etc etc etc.

Simple things really, for example I would use whitehaven morrisons and the shops beside mcdonalds much more, if it was not such a pain to get out of the car parks due to the lights being so awkward. A simple solution to the entry problems would be to replace the lights at morrisons, and at the esso garage at the top of coach road with roundabouts.

we also need better parking, so rip down the multi story and start again, the new multistory at workington is a pleasure to use and re-assuring, lets learn from them.

this type of infrastructure would bring more people to the town, thus businesses would start, thus more people would come, so more business etc.
