Greg Clark in Cumbria today

I spent most of today with Greg Clark, shadow secretary of state for energy and climate change, on a tour of Cumbria.

He saw a range of facilities connnected with Education in general and traning for the nuclear industry in particular, and met people connected with various programmes to regenerate Cumbria, including union members from Sellafield.

I was very pleased to hear Greg's positive message about how a Conservative government would take forward the regeneration of this county and the nuclear renaissance.

Where are the new nuclear reactors going to be developed? Cumbria?

There are ten sites currently under consideration by DECC as possible locations for new nuclear build.

Three of these are in Cumbria, all in Copeland - Sellafield, Kirksanton, and Braystones.

Of these, Sellafield is my preferred choice for nuclear new build in Cumbria. There are concerns about the proposals for new nuclear build at Kirksanton and Braystones as I have explained on previous posts.

I asked where are the nuclear reactors going to be developed?
Are they going to be British designs or do we not have the capability to design them? Are we going to have to buy them off Johnny Foreigner?

Your question could be taken two ways and I thought you were referring to the site of the facility.

There are two companies with proven designs suitable for nuclear new build. One of them used to be a British company until the present Labour government sold it to the Americans.

Will these reactors use Sellafield MOX fuel?

I would like to see reprocessing continue, and a new generation of reactors use recycled fuel. This would transform a waste product into a huge asset.

Will these reactors use Sellafield MOX fuel? NO is the answer you're looking for Chris.

Depends which type of reactor is eventually chosen, and I am not going to pre-judge that process.

Another facile answer.
Do either of these two companies with proven designs suitable for nuclear new build use reactors that burn Sellafield MOX fuel?

The ONE product Sellafield make is going to be of no use unless these 'proven designs' are significantly modified. Shame we don't have a viable British designed Fast Breeder, thanks Maggie.
